Today Extra is an Australian morning talk show, with an infotainment base, hosted by David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys.
SYLVIA: She's an athlete, a screenwriter - in fact, one could call her a "Jane of all trades". Now, Aussie creative, Jane Larkin's directorial debut, sporting drama - "The Edge" - is coming to Netflix.
DAVE: And we are delighted that Jane joins us now live from the Sunny Coast - a great place to be. G'day, Jane, how are you?
JANE: I'm great - great to be here.
DAVE: Well congratulations on this - tell us a little about "The Edge".
JANE: Oh well, I think the trailer summed it up pretty well, but I'm used to chatting about it too! It's about three elite female athletes. One is a Japanese Paralympic swimmer, one is an Aussie sprinter, (that's who I play), and one is a First Nations powerlifter. And the unique thing about us is we actually are elite athletes. So, we transitioned from athletes to acting.
DAVE: I love it.
SYLVIA: Well, that's it. So, you all bring incredible insight into the stories that you're trying to portray here onscreen. What exactly are you trying to share with the audience through these characters and through their stories?
JANE: Um, authenticity. But also, I think that diverse female storytelling is really important too. And I think the thing I really liked is that there's quite often alike, one or two stereotypes I think in like this is the female athlete trope and it was important to me to showcase that we're individuals, we're humans, we're not robots - there's a lot more to it - and I really hope we get that across.
DAVE: Tell us about getting Netflix involved. We see them putting more money into Australian productions which I think is terrific. Did you go to them, or they come to you first?
JANE: Oh, I definitely went to them! [Laughs] I was stoked Netflix ANZ have just been incredible to work with. It's coming out on the 20th of June, and for us it was literally my dream come true to get it on that streaming platform.
SYLVIA: Well, I understand that the likes of Sally Pearson and Liesel Jones also featured in this. How did this all come about?
JANE: Well, you know, while I'm not Sally, I obviously ha d a career in elite sprinting and I've been on relay teams with her and club teams with her, so I called in a few favours. I really wanted it to look as authentic as possible and it's a great source of pride to me that we have Olympians and great female role models who are cameoing as themselves, because I think it's just t's awesome to see that.
DAVE: So, you're doing all this, you got a Netflix film; you're a sports-star as well, and we believe you're expecting a baby as well. Is that true?
JANE: Yep, I'm due in a week. So...
DAVE: Oh my goodness! Well, thank you for making time! How are you feeling?
JANE: Oh, I mean, it's been a mixed journey. I hear they're really cute.
[Laughs]
SYLVIA: I love that! Well, your greatest adventure and journey is just ahead of you. Congratulations on the pregnancy and congratulations on the show as well. It's really exciting and a great development for you - well done. Great to have Aussie stories on Netflix. Well done to you.
JANE: Thank you.
SYLVIA: See you soon. All the best.
The Edge will be streaming on Netflix from June 20.
