Updated: Jun 7, 2023

A Hot 91.1 Sunshine Coast Radio interview with Jane Larkin, conducted by Sam Coward and Ash Gierke.

SAM: Now the story of supreme athlete to superstar should be fairly common for you, Ash, because it’s kind of your story. But it’s also this young lady’s. Jane Larkin, good morning, you!

JANE: Morning!

ASH: How are you?

JANE: Yeah, great!

SAM: Now Jane is producer, director, promoter of film, and star of the edge which is a film we spoke a little while about Jane. Fill us in, give us a plot point, basically feminism, athletes, , diversity.

JANE: You’re nailing it up, almost summing it up better than I can, I should just walk out.

[Laugh]

Essentially, what we’re doing is not just promoting this film, which should be on streaming services later this year or early next year, but we’re about promoting its themes and the region of the Sunshine Coast. So doing that means we’ve created this thing:

LIVING ON THE EDGE: A FASHION DIVERSITY SHOWCASE. Where we’re grabbing some of our stars, Paralympians, Olympians, our actors, our models and right outside the Sunshine Plaza, next Saturday, March the 25th at 3pm, we are showcasing these incredible people.ASH: Oh wow. So what does this entail? Have you got outfits ready to roll? People coming on board for that. How does this work.

JANE: Absolutely. We’ve got a bunch of sports brands coming on to sponsor the film. We’ve also got Puma, Speedo, SBD, LSKD’s been awesome too and once we’ve run it by the Sunshine Plaza we’ve now got Rebel Myer David Jones, Universal and we’re dressing our superstars in those clothes.

SAM: I love this. I absolutely love this. And when you think about it, and this is why I’m hosting.

JANE: Yes, Sam is MCing!

SAM: And when you think about our Paralympians. They’re different; We have different body shapes and different things going on. And not all costumes and wardrobe requirements. The attire that’s required to perform the tasks are the same.

JANE: Absolutely. And I’m going to give som4hting away. So, wait on! Mei Ichinose who plays Yui Takahashi. She’s an S9 classification in para, that means she’s missing half a limb so she can’t put on a swim cap the traditional way. So, the teammates help out and they all do it together.

SAM: Well, it’s pointing out what we can do, not pointing out what we can’t do. When it comes to the word disability. Every single of us has a disability. There’s lots of stuff Ash can’t do. The point is that we all have exceptional qualities. Movies like yours is fantastic.

JANE: Absolutely, and Ash will know this too. Swimmers look different to runners, runners look different to powerlifters.

SAM: If there was, I’d be close.

ASH: My cousin, she’s an S9 athlete as well. She’s a long jumper. And in pre-school, she was. The only one in the class that could tie her shoelaces, but she was losing half her limb. Here she is doing it with one arm.

SAM: Show off.

ASH: They’ve had to learn things differently.

SAM: Absolutely, and learning things different, doesn’t mean worse.

JANE: That’s right. And all these different body types mean there’s not just one version of sexy. SAM: Wait, hang on…

[Laugh]

JANE: Because there isn’t! And I’m bringing on other people who weren’t just in the film. I’ve got some Commonwealth Games athletes who have transitioned out of competitive sport. Now they’re not just a model, a model and a mother. The region itself is doing so much. There’s a short film called THE GORGE being shot here, that I’m crewing on too!

Janey Larkin, this is going to be a fashion for diversity showcase.

ASH: Be there ort be square. It’s Hot 91.1 Hot FM.
